Who was Calvin of Oakknoll? How did this eccentric
gadfly, visionary freethinker, and ardent humanist become the target of
his community, and end up on trial for murder?
Throughout the trial transcript, every time the
judge is confronted with the prosecutor’s desire to use
Calvin of Oakknoll’s lack of religious belief as evidence,
the judge says “I am not going to have a heresy
trial.” But that is exactly what they did have in Jamestown,
New York, in 1981.
